Riverside Roundabout

This City of Los Angeles project is a $40 million bridge renovation that spans the LA river between the 5 and 110 freeways. The roundabout — designed to help control smog and exhaust impacts on surrounding residents — will be the first roundabout in LA! Hyphae Design Laboratory, served as the landscape and civil engineer for the sustainable stormwater features of the project. Hyphae worked with the Bureau of Engineering and a local public artist, Greeneme, to make the roundabout not only an art piece, but also a stormwater bioretention landscape. The system has the capacity to capture and treat a 10-year event rainfall, or 500,000 gallons, off of the adjacent bridge and roads, The system also includes a 25,000 gallon cistern that supplies a water feature, as well as a solar tracking PV system that powers irrigation, lights and the artwork. We worked with AECOM/HNTB, the prime Engineers and the City to design and size the systems, then convince all relevant agencies, of its engineering viability, then produced full landscape and civil construction documents and specifications for the roundabout, as well as surrounding street trees and bioswales. We are now doing Construction Administration.
